Hohenwald is a city located in Lewis County, Tennessee. It is also the county seat, which means it's where the main government offices for the county are. In 2020, about 3,668 people lived there.
The name "Hohenwald" comes from German words that mean "High Forest." This name fits well with the area's natural beauty.
Many interesting things can be found in Hohenwald. The Lewis and Clark Expedition explorer, Meriwether Lewis, passed away and was buried near the town in 1809. Famous people like comedy star Rod Brasfield and race car driver David Sisco also called Hohenwald home. The author William Gay was also from here.
Hohenwald is home to the Elephant Sanctuary. This is the largest natural-habitat home for elephants in the United States. It's a special place where elephants can live freely. You can also find the third largest animal trophy collection in North America at the Lewis County Museum. The historic Lewis County Courthouse and Hohenwald Rail Depot are important landmarks.

History of Hohenwald
The town of Hohenwald was started in 1878. Later, it joined with a town called "New Switzerland" to the south. New Switzerland was founded in 1894 by people who moved there from Switzerland.
The arrival of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway helped Hohenwald grow a lot. This train connection made it easier to transport timber and farm products. This helped Hohenwald become an important business center in Lewis County. The railway also helped the town's population grow and shaped its development.
