About Hohes Licht
Hohes Licht is about 14 kilometers (9 miles) south of a town called Oberstdorf. It is a popular spot for hikers and climbers. The mountain is known for its beautiful views of the surrounding Alps.
Early Ascents
The first time someone officially climbed Hohes Licht was in 1854. This climb was part of a "cartological survey." This means people were mapping the area and needed to place a special marker. They left a "survey signal" on top. This signal was used for triangulation, a way to measure distances and create accurate maps.
Later, on August 6, 1869, a famous climber named Hermann von Barth reached the summit. He was the first to climb it just for fun, not for mapping. When he got to the top, the old survey signal was still there!
