Holden is a small town in Millard County, Utah, United States. In 2020, about 438 people lived there.

History of Holden
Holden was first settled in 1855. Ten families were sent by leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from nearby Fillmore.
Early Names of the Town
The town was first called Cedar Springs. This name came from the natural springs found among the juniper trees where the community was built. Later, it was known as Buttermilk Fort. Travelers passing through were invited to stop and enjoy a cold glass of buttermilk.
How Holden Got Its Name
Holden got its own post office in 1864. At that time, the town was renamed to honor Elijah E. Holden. He was an early settler and a member of the Mormon Battalion, a group of volunteers who served in the U.S. Army. Sadly, Elijah Holden died in a snowstorm in 1858.

Before the I-15 freeway was built around the town, Holden had many businesses. These included five gas stations, a grocery store, a cafe, a swimming pool, and a dance hall. These businesses are no longer there.
Current Businesses and Farming
Today, Holden has a dental office and a UPS transfer station. This station helps deliver packages throughout Millard County. There is also a nursery that grows local plants. Other small businesses include beauticians, a cabinet shop, and a real estate business. Many people also run craft businesses from their homes.
Farming is still important, with cattle, alfalfa hay, and corn being the main crops. Most farms are just outside the town, but they are owned by people who live in Holden.
Major Employers in the Area
People in Holden also work for larger companies nearby. These include Intermountain Community Hospital and the Intermountain Power Project (IPP). Other employers are Brush Wellman, Sunrise Engineering, the Great Lake Cheese Company of Utah, Mountain View Mushrooms, and Kern River Gas Transmission.
