The History of Holden

Holden was built between 1902 and 1915. It was created by a mining engineer named Albert F. "Bert" Holden. He wanted to build a special "model mining town." This means he planned it carefully to be a great place for miners and their families to live.

The town was built along Copperas Mine Fork. It had its own sawmills and a brick-making factory. These helped create all the buildings needed for the community. All the buildings were made from materials found nearby, like stones from a local quarry.

In 1907, another engineer wrote about Holden. He said it was "most attractive and most worthy of praise." He noted that all the houses had electric lights, fireplaces, and porches. They also had water from wells and were nicely painted. He believed it was a very well-planned and managed community.

By 1909, many buildings had been constructed. There were 400 buildings in total. These included houses, stores, barns, and workshops. There was also a power plant to provide electricity. The main part of the community was known as "Main Holden."
