Playing Career
Early Days and Joining Hamburger SV
Holger was born in Hamburg, Germany. He started playing football at just six years old for a local team called TuS Hamburg. He was very good at playing as a "sweeper." A sweeper is a special kind of defender who plays behind the other defenders.
In 1979, after Hamburger SV won the Bundesliga (Germany's top football league), their manager, Günter Netzer, signed Holger from FC St. Pauli.
Success with Hamburger SV
The very next season, Holger started playing his first games for Hamburger SV. He even played in the European Cup final in 1980. However, his team lost to Nottingham Forest in that match.
In 1982, Holger won his first big trophy when Hamburger SV won the Bundesliga. The same year, his team also reached the UEFA Cup final but lost to IFK Göteborg.
The next year, 1983, was even better! His club won the Bundesliga title again. They also won the European Cup by beating Juventus in the final in Athens. Holger was a regular player for Hamburger SV during this successful time.
Playing for West Germany
Holger also played for the West Germany national team. He played three matches between 1981 and 1982. He was even chosen to be part of the team for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Although he didn't play in any games during the World Cup, it was a great honor to be selected.
Career-Ending Injury
Sadly, Holger's playing career ended too soon. On March 31, 1984, during a Bundesliga game, he got a very serious knee injury. This injury was so severe that it forced him to stop playing football in 1985. He was only 26 years old when he had to retire. By then, he had played in 121 Bundesliga matches for Hamburger SV.
Life After Football
New Beginnings
After his football career ended, Holger looked for new things to do. He first started a sports center. Later, he and his former teammate, Ditmar Jakobs, opened a center to help athletes recover from injuries. Ditmar Jakobs also had his career cut short by a serious injury.
Return to Hamburger SV
In 1997, Holger returned to his old club, Hamburger SV. He became the new marketing manager for the team. From 1998 to 2002, he worked as the general manager of the club.
Working for German Football
On February 1, 2005, Holger took on an important role at DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga GmbH. This organization helps manage and run the Bundesliga competition in Germany.
