History of Hollister
Hollister began to grow in the early 1880s. A woman named Melinda Fortner settled there first. She claimed a large piece of land in 1867.
Later, Reuben Kirkham opened a general store. He asked for a post office to be set up in the area. He suggested the name "Hollister" for the new post office. He named it after his daughter, who was born in Hollister, California. The post office has been open since 1904.
A special area in Hollister, called the Downing Street Historic District, is important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This means it is a place with historical value that is protected.
