Her Creative Work

Becoming an Author

Holly Hobbie is the author of many beloved children's books. She is also the artist who created the famous Holly Hobbie character.

The Holly Hobbie Character

In the late 1960s, Holly Hobbie started drawing pictures of a sweet little girl. This girl wore a big bonnet and a rag dress. She also loved cats!

Holly's brother-in-law encouraged her to show her art to American Greetings. This company is known for greeting cards. Her drawings were inspired by her own children. They showed a cozy, old-fashioned style from New England.

Her artwork became very popular. The character, who was first called "blue girl," soon became known as Holly Hobbie, just like her creator.
