National Geographic Kids is a popular magazine for children. It is published by the National Geographic Society. The very first issue came out in September 1975. Back then, it was called National Geographic World. This magazine replaced an older one called National Geographic School Bulletin.

The magazine was known as National Geographic World for 26 years. Then, in 2002, its name changed to National Geographic Kids. You can think of it as a special version of the main National Geographic magazine, but made just for kids!

About the Magazine and Its Readers

National Geographic Kids publishes ten issues every year. The main office for the magazine is in Washington, D.C. In 2006, over 1.3 million copies were printed in English. More than 4.6 million people were estimated to read the English version.

The magazine is also printed in many other languages. There are eighteen different editions around the world. These include countries like Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom. The magazine is written for kids between 6 and 14 years old. A group of 500 readers helps guide the magazine. They also ask readers for their ideas after each issue.

In June 2020, the English and Afrikaans versions in South Africa became digital-only. This means they are now only available online. Before that, they had been printed for 16 years.

Other Magazines and Books

The magazine also started a spin-off called National Geographic Little Kids. This one is for even younger children, usually those not yet in kindergarten.

In 2009, National Geographic Kids launched its first almanac. It was called National Geographic Kids Almanac 2010. An almanac is a book with lots of facts and interesting information. They have continued to release new, updated almanacs every year since then.

National Geographic Kids has also published several world atlases. These books are full of maps and facts about different places.

  • World Atlas 1st Edition
  • World Atlas 2nd Edition
  • World Atlas 3rd Edition (2010)
  • World Atlas 4th Edition (2014)
