Discovering National Geographic Kids Magazine

A Look Back: How Nat Geo Kids Started

The journey for National Geographic Kids began a long time ago. In 1919, the National Geographic Society started reaching out to elementary school children with something called the National Geographic School Bulletin. This bulletin came out every week during the school year.

Later, in September 1975, they decided to create a brand new magazine just for kids. They stopped the Bulletin and launched National Geographic World. This magazine was a big hit!

Then, in October 2002, National Geographic World got a new name: National Geographic Kids. At this time, it also started including advertisements from companies like The Walt Disney Company and Nintendo. This change helped the magazine grow even more. There's also a magazine called National Geographic Explorer that is still used in classrooms today. For even younger kids, aged 3-6, National Geographic Little Kids started publishing in 2007.

Reaching Young Explorers Worldwide

National Geographic Kids magazine comes out ten times every year. In 2006, over 1.3 million copies were printed in English, and it was read by more than 4.6 million people! That's a lot of curious minds!

The magazine isn't just in English. There are also eighteen different versions published in other languages around the world. You can find National Geographic Kids in countries like Germany, Greece, Poland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, among many others. It's designed for children between 6 and 14 years old. The magazine even has a special group of 500 readers who give feedback after each issue, helping to make it even better!

Sadly, the print versions of the English and Afrikaans editions in South Africa stopped in June 2020. They had been printed for 16 years before becoming digital-only.

Special Celebrations: Anniversary Issues

Sometimes, National Geographic Kids celebrates big milestones with special anniversary issues.

For its 25th anniversary in September 2000, the magazine had a big celebration. It featured a "Top 25" list of things readers loved most (the magazine covers were number one!). There was also a collection of cards sent in by readers and a special "Kids Did It!" column. This column shared updates on famous people, like the ice skater Michelle Kwan, who had been featured in the magazine when they were kids.

The 30th anniversary issue in September 2005 looked into the future. It had an article imagining what life might be like thirty years later, in 2035. It also shared thirty "cool things" that might exist in the future.

Beyond the Magazine: Books and TV Shows

National Geographic Kids isn't just a magazine; it also has awesome books and even had TV shows!

The Nat Geo Kids Almanac

Since 2009, National Geographic Kids has published an annual almanac. An almanac is a book full of facts, figures, and interesting information about many different topics. The first one was National Geographic Kids Almanac 2010, and a new updated version has come out every year since then, packed with fresh knowledge!
