A Look Back in Time
South Deerfield has a long history. It was once home to the Pocumtuck tribe. In 1673, settlers from Dedham, Massachusetts moved here.
The Battle of Bloody Brook
On September 18, 1675, a big event happened. Native Americans attacked Captain Thomas Lathrop and his small group. This fight is known as the Battle of Bloody Brook. The Native Americans won this battle at first. But then, more soldiers arrived and drove them away.
After this battle, the area was called Bloody Brook. Later, it became South Deerfield. In 1809, people in South Deerfield wanted to become a separate town. They were far from Deerfield's main meeting place. They also had different religious ideas. Their request was not approved. So, South Deerfield stayed part of Deerfield. However, they built their own meetinghouse in 1821.
South Deerfield is located near the Connecticut River. It grew as a small farming community. Today, you can find many shops and services there. These include a hardware store and a family restaurant. The town's Tilton Library is also in South Deerfield. Frontier Regional High School is located here too.
