Hollyhock Island facts for kids
Hollyhock Island is a small island in the River Thames in England. It's located on a part of the river between two locks: Bell Weir Lock and Penton Hook Lock. People live on this island.
Where is Hollyhock Island?
The island sits in a narrow waterway. This channel is between a bigger island called Holm Island and the north bank of the River Thames. Hollyhock Island is in Berkshire, which is part of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. This area is close to the border with Surrey.
If you travel upstream from the island, you'll find the Runnymede Bridge. This bridge carries the M25 motorway, a very busy road. Downstream from the island are Church Island and Staines Bridge.
Maps from the 1890s show that Hollyhock Island used to have footbridges. These bridges connected it to both the north bank of the river and to Holm Island. However, by the 1960s, these footbridges were no longer there.
What is on Hollyhock Island?
There was once a house on the island called "The Nest." It was said that Edward VIII, who would later become king, used this house as a private place to visit with Wallis Simpson.
Today, modern maps do not show any buildings on Hollyhock Island. They also show that the island is not connected to the mainland by any bridges.
