The Hollywood Museum is a cool place in Hollywood, California. It's filled with amazing items from the history of American movies and TV shows. You can find it on North Highland Avenue in Los Angeles. The museum is inside a famous old building called the Max Factor Salon. This building was designed by a well-known architect named Simeon Charles Lee.
The museum has more than 11,000 different things! These include costumes, props, and even stop-motion figures. You can also see old photographs, scripts, and other cool movie stuff. One of the most interesting parts is seeing the original four makeup rooms. These were used by Max Factor, a makeup artist who worked with many Hollywood stars. Each room was designed for a different hair color: redheads, blondes, brownettes, and brunettes.
Right next to the museum, there's a branch of Mel's Drive-In restaurant. So, you can grab a bite after exploring!
History of the Museum Building
The building where the museum is now was first bought in 1928. A famous makeup artist named Max Factor owned it. He was known for doing makeup for many movie stars. The building was sold to the Hollywood Museum in 1994. It took nine years to get the building ready. Finally, the museum opened its doors to the public in 2003.
In June 2016, the museum had a special exhibit. It was called "Reel to Real: Portrayals and Perceptions of Gays in Hollywood". This exhibit showed how different people were shown in movies.
The museum had to close for 17 months in 2020 and 2021. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It reopened in August 2021, ready for visitors again.
