Holm Village (called Tolm in Scottish Gaelic) is a small community in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It's located on the Isle of Lewis, very close to the main town of Stornoway. Holm is divided into two main parts: "Holm Village" itself and "Holm Road with Parkend". It's part of the wider Stornoway area.
The Iolaire Memorial: A Sad Story
What Happened to HMS Iolaire?
On Holm Point, you'll find the Iolaire Memorial. This special monument remembers a very sad event from 1919. A ship called HMS Iolaire was lost on rocks nearby.
The ship was carrying many people, including soldiers who were coming home after World War I. Sadly, 205 people died in this accident. It was a huge loss for the island community.
Remembering the Heroes
The memorial stands as a reminder of those who lost their lives. It helps people remember the brave soldiers and sailors who were returning home. The event is a very important part of the history of the Isle of Lewis.
