History of the Cemetery
Before Home of Peace, there was an "Old Jewish Cemetery" in San Francisco. It was built in 1847. By 1860, the graves were moved to an area that is now Mission Dolores Park. This old cemetery served two important groups: Congregation Emanu-El and Congregation Sherith Israel.
As San Francisco grew bigger, the city decided to move cemeteries outside the city limits. So, the Home of Peace Cemetery was created in Colma. The Hills of Eternity Memorial Park was also started at the same time. Each cemetery served a different Jewish congregation.
