Hontalbilla is a small town, also known as a municipality, located in the province of Segovia in Castile and León, Spain. In 2004, a count of people called a census showed that about 391 people lived there. By 2018, the population was around 308.
A Look Back: Hontalbilla's History
The village of Hontalbilla has a long history. We have old records that mention it from way back in 1184. At that time, it was called "Fontalvella."
Later, in 1247, its name changed slightly to "Fuent Alviella del Pinar." By the 1500s, it was known as "Hontalbilla," which is the name it still has today.
You might sometimes see the name spelled with a "v" instead of a "b." But the last part of the name, "Albilla," comes from "Fuente Albilla," which means "Albilla Spring." It has nothing to do with the word "villa," which means a large country house.
The Importance of Pine Trees
For many centuries, the area around Hontalbilla has been famous for its large and healthy pine trees. Many old documents talk about how important these trees were.
In the mid-1800s, a writer named Pascual Madoz wrote a special dictionary about Spain's geography and history. In his book, he mentioned the amazing Corsican pines from Hontalbilla. He said that the best wood products in the country were made from these high-quality trees.
