Hoogezand-Sappemeer was a special kind of town group, called a municipality, in the northeastern part of the Netherlands. It was once the third biggest municipality in the Groningen province. Only Groningen and Oldambt were larger.
This municipality was created in 1949. It was formed when two older towns, Hoogezand and Sappemeer, joined together. Hoogezand was well-known for its ship building industry. However, on January 1, 2018, Hoogezand-Sappemeer merged with two other municipalities, Slochteren and Menterwolde. Together, they formed a new, bigger municipality called Midden-Groningen.
