Where is Hookhamsnyvy Creek?
Hookhamsnyvy Creek is found north of a place called Parnassus. It starts high up in the Hundalee Hills. The creek flows mostly towards the south. After a short distance, it turns west. Finally, it joins another river called the Leader River.
The Creek and the Railway History
The Hookhamsnyvy Creek has a cool connection to New Zealand's railway history.
Building the Main North Line
In 1912, a big railway project began. The Main North Line railway opened. It connected Christchurch to Parnassus. The main goal was to build the line even further north. It was planned to reach Picton. This route would go through towns like Blenheim and Kaikoura.
A Change in Plans
The first plan for the railway followed the Leader Valley. This route would have needed the Hookhamsnyvy Creek to be moved. Some early work was even started to change the creek's path. However, World War I began in 1914. This big war caused the railway construction to stop.
When the railway building started again, a new plan was chosen. This new route went along the coast. It passed through Hundalee. Because of this new route, moving the Hookhamsnyvy Creek was no longer needed. The railway line was finally finished in 1945.
