Hoopers Inlet is a beautiful natural area. It is one of two large inlets found on the Pacific coast of the Otago Peninsula. This peninsula is located on the South Island of New Zealand.

About Hoopers Inlet

Hoopers Inlet is a shallow body of water. At low tide, much of it becomes sand and mud flats. This makes it a great place for many different birds to find food. It is very similar to its nearby neighbour, Papanui Inlet.

Where is Hoopers Inlet?

Hoopers Inlet is about 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) south of a town called Portobello. You can easily reach it by road from Portobello. It is also about 15 kilometres (9.3 miles) west of the city of Dunedin. Hoopers Inlet is part of the Dunedin area.

The Story Behind the Name

The name "Hoopers Inlet" has an interesting history. There was a family named Hooper who lived nearby a long time ago. However, the name "Hoopers Inlet" appeared on maps even before they arrived!

Some people think the name might have changed over time. It could have originally been "Cooper's Inlet." This name might have come from Daniel Cooper. He was a ship's captain who sailed the Unity in this area. His ship was used when the Otago Peninsula was a base for seal hunters.

The Māori people, who are the native people of New Zealand, had their own name for the inlet. They called it Puke-tu-roto. This name means "hills standing around a lake" or "hills standing inland." The inlet was an important part of a traditional Māori route. They used this route to collect shellfish. It went from Otakou to what is now St. Clair.

Amazing Wildlife

Hoopers Inlet is famous for its many different kinds of birds. It is a wonderful place for birdwatching. The inlet's mouth is narrow because of a large sand spit. This spit forms Allans Beach on its ocean side.

Behind Allans Beach, there is a large area of wetlands and swamp. This wet area is a special home for many types of plants and birds. It provides a safe habitat for them to live and grow.

Hoopers Inlet and Papanui Inlet

Hoopers Inlet is separated from Papanui Inlet by a strip of land. This land acts like a bridge, connecting a hilly peninsula to the mainland. This peninsula includes Cape Saunders. It also has the highest point on the Otago Peninsula, which is Mount Charles. Mount Charles stands 408 metres (1,339 feet) tall.
