History of the Gulf Oil Refinery

The Gulf Oil Company started operating a large facility in Hooven in 1931. This refinery made many different products, including jet fuel, diesel fuel, gasoline, and home-heating oil.

In 1985, the site was bought by the Chevron Corporation. That same year, the U.S. EPA began looking into the site because fuel was leaking into the nearby Great Miami River. In 1986, the refinery closed down. This meant over 200 people lost their jobs, which had a big impact on Hooven's local economy.

Since then, Chevron has been working with the EPA to clean up the site. They are cleaning the contaminated soil and groundwater. The EPA has stated that during the refinery's operation, about 5 million gallons (19 million liters) of fuel leaked into the local aquifer (underground water supply). However, the people of Hooven get their clean drinking water from the Cleves public water supply, which was not affected by the refinery's leaks.
