Calycadenia hooveri is a special flowering plant found only in California. People often call it Hoover's western rosinweed. It belongs to the daisy family, just like sunflowers! This plant grows only in a small part of the western Sierra Nevada foothills. You can find it in rocky places in the hills, from Amador County all the way to Madera County.

What is Hoover's Western Rosinweed?

Hoover's western rosinweed is a type of plant that lives for only one year. It grows thin, tall stems that can be anywhere from 10 to 60 centimeters (about 4 to 24 inches) high.

Plant Appearance

The leaves of this plant are long and narrow. They grow one after another along the stem, especially near the bottom. The longest leaves can be up to 8 centimeters (about 3 inches) long.

Flowers and Fruit

The plant has a special cluster of flowers called an inflorescence. This cluster has several small, leaf-like parts called bracts. Each bract has a round, sticky bump on it, which is a type of gland.

The inflorescence also has tiny flower heads. Each head usually has one or two small flowers called disc florets. Sometimes, it also has one or two white, lobed flowers called ray florets. These look like the petals of a daisy.

After the flowers bloom, they produce a type of fruit called an achene. This is a small, dry fruit that contains the seed. The achenes from the disc florets might have a small crown of scales on top, which is called a pappus.
