History of Hope Township

The area around Hope Township has an interesting past. In the 1830s and 1840s, people worked to help the Potawatomi Native American people living near Cedar Creek.

Hope Township was officially created as a township in 1850. This means it became a recognized local government area.

Cedar Creek

Cedar Creek is a small area in the southeast part of the township. It is located at 42°31′13″N 85°19′39″W / 42.52028°N 85.32750°W / 42.52028; -85.32750. In 1849, a man named Isaac LaGrange built the very first sawmill here. This sawmill helped cut wood from trees. A post office was also opened in Cedar Creek in 1850. Isaac LaGrange was the first person in charge of it. The post office closed permanently in 1904.

Cloverdale

Cloverdale is another community in Hope Township. It is not officially a town or city, but it has its own ZIP code (49035) for mail. Cloverdale is located on Long Lake, which is a popular spot.

Schultz

Schultz (sometimes spelled Shultz) is also an unincorporated community in the township. You can find it at 42°34′50″N 85°20′47″W / 42.58056°N 85.34639°W / 42.58056; -85.34639 (Schultz). This community used to be a stop on the Chicago, Kalamazoo and Saginaw Railway train line. A post office was open in Schultz from 1888 until 1933.
