One of Hopewell's most important early residents was George K. Gay. He was a true pioneer in Oregon. In May 1843, George K. Gay attended a very important meeting. This meeting was called the Champoeg Meeting. During this meeting, people voted to create the provisional government for the Oregon Territory. This was a big step in forming what would become the state of Oregon.

George K. Gay also built something special in Hopewell. In 1842, he constructed the very first brick house in the entire state of Oregon. This shows how early and important his contributions were to the area.
