Hormigueros barrio-pueblo is a special part of Hormigueros, a town in Puerto Rico. It's like the main downtown area. This place is the administrative center, which means it's where the local government offices are.
In 2010, about 1,204 people lived here. It's important not to confuse it with the larger Hormigueros barrio, which is another area in the same town.
Just like in Spain, towns in Puerto Rico often have a central area called a pueblo. This pueblo usually has a main square, town hall buildings, and a Catholic church. Every year, special celebrations called Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in the central square.

The Central Plaza and Its Church
The central plaza, or town square, is a very important place. It's used for both official events and fun activities. People gather here to hang out and socialize from morning until night.
Long ago, in the early 1800s, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies guided how towns in Puerto Rico were built. These laws said that the plaza should be big enough for all the town's celebrations. They also said that streets nearby should have comfortable walkways to protect people from the sun and rain.
Right across from the central plaza in Hormigueros barrio-pueblo, you'll find the beautiful Basílica Menor de la Virgen de Monserrate. This is a Roman Catholic church.
History of Hormigueros barrio-pueblo
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States, which means it's part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States government took a count of the people in Puerto Rico. They found that the combined population of Hormigueros barrio-pueblo and Guanajibo barrios was 1,203 people.
