Hossam Ghaly is a famous Egyptian former professional footballer. He was born on October 21, 1981. Ghaly played as a central midfielder, a key position in the middle of the field. After his football career, he became a board member for Al Ahly SC, a big football club. He also became a member of the Egyptian Parliament. His last professional football match was on May 11, 2018, playing for Al Ahly against Ajax.
Ghaly's Football Journey
Starting Out in Egypt
Hossam Ghaly began his football journey at a young age. He joined the youth team of Al Ahly SC, one of Egypt's biggest clubs. By 1997, when he was just 16, he joined the first team. He played regularly for Al Ahly, showing great talent. In 2003, he moved to Europe to play for Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Many other European clubs were interested in him.
Playing in England
Joining Tottenham Hotspur
In January 2006, Ghaly moved to England to play for Tottenham Hotspur. This club is part of the Premier League, England's top football league. He signed a contract to play for them for four and a half years.
Ghaly wore the number 14 jersey. He played his first game for Tottenham on September 9, 2006, against Manchester United. He scored his first goal for the team in a UEFA Cup match in October 2006. He also scored an important goal in an FA Cup game against Chelsea in March 2007. A week later, he scored his only Premier League goal in a win against Watford.
A Difficult Moment
During a game against Blackburn Rovers in May 2007, Ghaly was substituted. He was upset and threw his shirt to the ground. This action made some fans angry. Ghaly later apologized, saying he was very upset with himself and never meant to disrespect the club. He explained that he was frustrated with his performance and the crowd's reaction. He said he always felt honored to wear the Tottenham shirt. After this incident, he did not play for Tottenham again. He wanted to leave the club to play more in his preferred central midfield position.
Loan to Derby County
In January 2008, Ghaly went on loan to Derby County until the end of the season. He played 12 games for them. After Derby County was relegated, Ghaly decided he wanted to stay in the Premier League.
Back at Tottenham (Briefly)
When he returned to Tottenham, he was given a new jersey number. However, during an FA Cup game in January 2009, some fans booed him when he was warming up to play. Because of this, the manager decided not to put him into the game.
Moving to Saudi Arabia
On January 22, 2009, Hossam Ghaly moved to Al-Nassr, a football club in Saudi Arabia. He signed a three-year contract with them.
Returning to Al Ahly
First Return
On July 6, 2010, Ghaly made a free transfer back to his first club, Al Ahly SC. He signed a three-year contract. He got his number 14 shirt back and also became the team captain. Later that year, he got an injury that kept him from playing for about six months.
Playing in Belgium
In July 2013, Ghaly moved to Belgium. He signed a one-year contract with Lierse SK, a team in the Belgian Pro League. He played there for one season.
Final Return to Al Ahly
Ghaly returned to Al Ahly in 2014 and played for them for three more years. After that, he joined Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia for one year. In 2018, he came back to Al Ahly for the last time, where he finished his amazing football career.
Life After Football
After retiring from playing, Hossam Ghaly became the Football Director at El Gouna FC from 2018 until October 2020. He also ran for president of Al Ahly in the 2021 management elections. Today, he is a board member at Al Ahly and serves as a Member of Parliament in Egypt.
