Hossein Behzad (born in 1894 – died October 13, 1968) was a very important Iranian painter. He is famous for his amazing miniature paintings. At first, he painted in the style of old Persian masters from the 1500s and 1600s. He wanted to keep this beautiful art form alive.

About Hossein Behzad
Early Life and Family
Hossein Behzad was born in Shiraz, Iran in 1894. His father, Mirza Lotfollah Esfahani, designed pen holders.
He married Azizeh Khanam in 1921. They had one son named Parviz.
Developing a New Art Style
In the early 1930s, Behzad helped organize an art school in Tehran. In 1934, he traveled to Paris, France, and stayed for over a year. During this trip, he studied many different painting styles. He visited famous museums like the Louvre and the Guimet museum. He also saw the beautiful Palace of Versailles.
This trip helped him create a brand new style of miniature painting. He mixed parts of traditional Persian art with modern Western painting ideas.
Becoming World Famous
Hossein Behzad became known around the world for his art. He won many awards for his work. In 1949, he received a top medal from Iran's Ministry of Culture. In 1958, he won a major international painting award in Minneapolis, USA.
In 1968, he was given an honorary professorship. This means he was recognized as a top expert by the College of Ornamental Arts.
Important Exhibitions
Behzad's paintings were shown in many places around the world. In 1953, he had a big exhibition at the Iran Bastan Museum. This show celebrated 1,000 years of the famous scholar Avicenna. Many people from different countries came to see his art. The paintings on display took him ten years to finish. They included famous scenes like those of Ferdowsi and the Maedan Arch.
A professor from Istanbul wrote that Behzad was a great artist who belonged to the whole world, not just Iran.
Soon after, Behzad had another successful exhibition. The French government sponsored this show at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris. It opened on May 18, 1955.
In 1956, fifty of Behzad's miniature paintings were shown in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. As he became a living master, his art was displayed in many cities. These included London, Prague, New York, Boston, and Brussels. His work was also shown in India and Japan.
Last Years and Legacy
By 1968, Behzad became ill. He was sent to Europe twice for treatment. Sadly, he passed away on October 13, 1968, at the age of 74. He was buried in a cemetery near Imamzadeh Abdollah in Shahr-i Ray.
To honor this amazing artist, the Behzad Museum was opened in 1994. It is located in Tehran's Sa'dabad Complex. The museum holds a large collection of his beautiful artworks.
Awards and Honors
- 1968 – He was given the honorary title of Art Master. This came from the Council of Art Instructors in Tehran.
- 1953 – He received the Avicenna Medal from the Iran-Bastan Museum.
- 1952 – He won an Olympic diploma for the best painting. This was at the Olympic Painting Exhibition in Helsinki, Finland.
