Different Ways to Make Hot Buttered Rum
There are many ways to make hot buttered rum. Some recipes use vanilla ice cream instead of butter. This makes the drink extra creamy. Other newer versions use organic coconut oil instead of butter. This can be a healthier choice for some people.
Tiki Style Hot Buttered Rum
In the 1940s, hot buttered rum became popular again as a "Tiki" drink. Tiki drinks are often served in fun, themed mugs, like ceramic skull mugs. Sometimes, hot buttered rum was changed into a drink called Coffee Grog.
A famous bartender named Trader Vic had his own special recipe for a "hot buttered rum batter." This batter used brown sugar, butter, salt, and spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves. He thought using a batter made the drink much better and smoother. This batter was also used in other warm drinks he created, such as the Northwest Passage and Hot Buttered Rum Cow.
Around 1950, other Tiki versions of the drink appeared. One was the Volcano House Hot Buttered Rum from a hotel in Hawaii. Another was the Pub and Prow Hot Buttered Rum from a restaurant in Chicago. The Volcano House recipe was special because it also used Maraschino liqueur. Sometimes, hot buttered rum is lit on fire for a cool show, especially the Coffee Grog version.
Hot Buttered Rum in Pop Culture
The writer Kenneth Roberts included hot buttered rum in his popular 1937 novel Northwest Passage. Some people think this book helped the drink become popular again in the 1940s. Roberts wrote in his story: “After a man’s had two—three drinks of hot buttered rum, he don’t shoot a catamount".
In an episode of the TV show Frasier (Season 5, Episode 14, called "Ski Lodge"), a character named Martin Crane says he wants to make hot buttered rum to stay warm.
Some people even celebrate January 17th as "Hot Buttered Rum Day"!
