The house at 3 Crown Street is a special old home in Nelsonville, New York, United States. It sits at the corner of Crown Street and Secor Street. This brick house was built in the 1800s. In 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. People called it "the finest mid-century Italianate building in the area."

What Makes This House Special?

This house is two stories tall and made of brick. It has five sections, or "bays," on its front. The house rests on a strong stone foundation.

Unique Features of the House

The main door is in the middle of the house. It has a small porch with a shed-style roof. Two fancy pillars hold up this porch. Above the door, there's an arched window called a transom. The door also has four-paneled side windows.

All the windows have special brick tops called lintels. These lintels are shaped like a curve. The windows also have shutters. The roof has a pointed shape, called a gable. It has a fancy edge with small blocks, known as a modillioned cornice.

Chimneys and Additions

You can see two brick chimneys on the south side of the roof. There's also a large chimney on the north side, where another part of the roof sticks out. A new section has been added to the back of the house since it was first built.

History of the Crown Street House

Records from local property taxes show that this house was likely built in 1868. It does not appear on the first map of Nelsonville, which was made in 1867. However, it is clearly shown on a map from 1876.

Who Built the House?

On the 1876 map, the owners are listed as J. and B. Secor. A local builder named E. Ferris was very active in that part of the village. He even owned another property with Secor. Because of this, many believe E. Ferris was the one who built the house at 3 Crown Street.

Past Owners

Since the Secor family, many different people have owned the house. Most of them were physicians. These owners have made very few changes to the house over the years. This means the house still looks much like it did when it was first built.
