The Church of Saint John the Baptist
The Sint-Jan Baptistkerk is the main church in Houthulst. It was completely destroyed during World War I. This big war happened from 1914 to 1918. The church was rebuilt in 1924. It stands as a symbol of the town's recovery.
Belgian Military Cemetery
Houthulst is home to a special place called the Belgian Military Cemetery. This cemetery holds the graves of almost 1,800 Belgian soldiers. They died fighting in World War I. There are also 81 graves for soldiers from Italy.
Many of these soldiers died during the final battles of the war. These battles took place on September 28, 1918. The soldiers fought to free the Vrijbos forest from enemy control.
