Howard Franklin Jeter, born on March 6, 1947, is an American who used to work as a diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. From 2001 to 2003, Mr. Jeter was the United States Ambassador to Nigeria. Before that, he also worked for the U.S. in Botswana, Lesotho, and Namibia.

Early Life and Education

Howard Jeter was born on March 6, 1947. His hometown was Maple Ridge in Union County, South Carolina. He had a brother named James Randolph Jeter and a sister named Jacquelyn Jeter. In 1964, he graduated from Sims High School. He was the top student in his class.

Mr. Jeter then went to Morehouse College. He earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science there. Later, he studied at Columbia University. He received a master's degree in International Relations and Comparative Politics. He also earned another master's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. This degree was in African Area Studies.

While in college, Jeter worked as an intern. He helped lawmakers in the Georgia House of Representatives. From 1967 to 1968, he studied in Nantes, France. His host family there gave him a nickname. They called him "Franc" because they found "Howard" hard to say.

A Career in Diplomacy

Howard Jeter had a long career helping the United States in other countries. He worked for the Foreign Service. This is a special part of the U.S. government that handles relations with other nations.

Ambassador to Botswana

From 1993 to 1996, Jeter served as the U.S. Ambassador to Botswana. An ambassador is the highest-ranking diplomat representing their country. In July 1996, he was given a special role. He became the President's special envoy for Liberia. Later, from 1999 to 2000, he was a Deputy Assistant Secretary. This role focused on African Affairs. During his career, he also served as a top diplomat in charge of embassies in Lesotho and Namibia.

Ambassador to Nigeria

Howard Jeter became the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria on January 18, 2001. He served in this important role until July 30, 2003. After 24 years of working in the Foreign Service, he retired in 2003. After retiring, Mr. Jeter started his own business. It is called Four Ways Enterprise, LLC.

Personal Life

Howard Jeter is married and has two children. Besides speaking English, he also knows other languages. He can speak Portuguese, Swahili, and French.
