Howell B. Treat (born March 31, 1833 – died July 21, 1912) was a brave American soldier. He fought during the American Civil War, a very important time in United States history. Treat earned the highest award for bravery a soldier can receive, the Medal of Honor. He received this special medal because he risked his own life to save a friend during a battle.

A Hero of the Civil War

Howell B. Treat was born in Connecticut in 1833. When he was a baby, his family moved to Claridon Township in Geauga County, Ohio. This is where he grew up.

Joining the Fight

When the American Civil War began, Howell B. Treat joined the Union Army. He became a Sergeant in Company I of the 52nd Ohio Infantry. The Civil War was a conflict between the northern states (the Union) and the southern states (the Confederacy). It lasted from 1861 to 1865.

An Act of Incredible Bravery

On May 11, 1864, Sergeant Treat was fighting in a place called Buzzard's Roost. This was a tough battle. During the fighting, one of his fellow soldiers was badly wounded. This soldier was in great danger.

Howell B. Treat didn't hesitate. He bravely went to help his injured friend. He put his own life at risk to bring the wounded comrade to safety. This act of courage showed his amazing dedication to his fellow soldiers.

Receiving the Medal of Honor

For his incredible bravery at Buzzard's Roost, Howell B. Treat was honored with the Medal of Honor. This medal is given to members of the United States armed forces who show extreme courage. It is usually for actions that go above and beyond the call of duty. Treat received his Medal of Honor on February 20, 1884.

After the war, Howell B. Treat lived a full life. He was later buried in Painesville, Ohio. His story reminds us of the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers during the Civil War.
