Hsu Shui-teh (born August 1, 1931 – died March 31, 2021) was an important politician from Taiwan. He held many high-ranking positions in the government. One of his most important roles was serving as the President of the Examination Yuan from 1996 to 2002.

Early Life and Education

Hsu Shui-teh was born in Takao, which is now part of Taiwan, in 1931. He went to two well-known universities in Taiwan. He studied at National Taiwan Normal University and later at National Chengchi University. These universities helped him prepare for his long career in public service.

A Career in Public Service

Hsu Shui-teh dedicated many years to working for the people of Taiwan. He held several key leadership roles throughout his career.

Leading Major Cities

Hsu Shui-teh served as the mayor of two of Taiwan's biggest cities.

• From 1982 to 1985, he was the Mayor of Kaohsiung City. As mayor, he was in charge of running the city and making decisions for its residents.
• After that, from 1985 to 1988, he became the Mayor of Taipei City, the capital of Taiwan. This was a very important job, overseeing many aspects of city life.

National Government Roles

After leading cities, Hsu Shui-teh moved on to even bigger roles in the national government.

• From 1988 to 1991, he served as the Minister of the Interior. This role is like being in charge of many important things for the country, such as local government, police, and elections.
• At the same time, he was also the Chairman of the Central Election Commission. This commission makes sure that all elections in Taiwan are fair and run smoothly.

Political Party Leadership

Hsu Shui-teh also played a big part in one of Taiwan's major political parties, the Kuomintang.

• From 1993 to 1996, he was the Secretary-General of the Kuomintang. This is a very powerful position within a political party, helping to lead and organize its activities.

One of his highest achievements was leading the Examination Yuan.

• From 1996 to 2002, Hsu Shui-teh was the President of the Examination Yuan. The Examination Yuan is one of the five main branches of the government in Taiwan. Its job is to make sure that people who want to work for the government are chosen fairly, based on their skills and knowledge, through special exams.

Later Contributions

Even after his time at the Examination Yuan, Hsu Shui-teh continued to contribute.

• From 2002 to 2004, he served as the Chairman of the Association of East Asian Relations. This association helps Taiwan connect with other countries in East Asia.

Later Life and Passing

Hsu Shui-teh passed away on March 31, 2021, at the age of 89. He died from pneumonia. He is remembered for his long and important career in public service in Taiwan.
