His father worked at the post office, and his mother was a teacher. Hubert Lampo himself became a teacher in 1938. Later, he worked as a national inspector for Flemish libraries. He was also the father of Jan Lampo, who became a writer too.

Hubert Lampo is known as one of the founders of the magic realist literary movement in Flanders.
