Huckleberry
Wild Huckleberries

Huckleberries are small, tasty berries found in North America. They grow on different kinds of plants that are part of the Ericaceae family. This family includes plants like blueberries and cranberries.

In fact, huckleberries are very similar to blueberries. Some plants are always called huckleberries, like the red huckleberry. But other plants might be called either huckleberries or blueberries, depending on where you are!

It's important to know that not all plants called "huckleberry" are true huckleberries. For example, the 'garden huckleberry' is actually part of the nightshade family, which is very different.

What are Huckleberries?

Huckleberries are small, round berries. They are usually less than 5 millimeters across, which is smaller than a pea! Each berry has about 10 tiny seeds inside.

These berries come in many different colors. You can find them in bright red, dark purple, and even blue shades.

What do Huckleberries Taste Like?

Huckleberries have a flavor similar to blueberries. They can taste anywhere from a little tart to quite sweet. Many mammals love to eat huckleberries. This includes bears and, of course, humans!

Huckleberries are so special in Idaho that they are the state's official fruit.
