About the Hudson's Bay Centre
This impressive tower is 135 meters (about 443 feet) tall. It has 35 floors and covers a huge area of 535,000 square feet (about 49,700 square meters). The address is 2 Bloor Street East, right at the corner of Yonge and Bloor Streets.
The large shopping area inside has a main store, which is the Hudson's Bay store. This particular store is known as the "Toronto, on Bloor Street" location. Inside the mall, you can find more than 45 different shops, small stores, services, and places to eat. The building also has a Marriott Hotel, an RBC Royal Bank branch, and even some apartments.
The centre has parking for 1,200 cars, both underground and above ground. You can enter the building from Yonge Street, Bloor Street, Park Road, and Asquith Avenue. It's surrounded by parks and the Yorkville neighborhood, which is famous for its fancy shops.
Connected to the Subway
The Hudson's Bay Centre is directly connected to the Bloor-Yonge subway station. This station is a major transfer point for the TTC's subway lines.
There are also underground walkways that connect to the Holt Renfrew Centre and Cumberland Terrace. These tunnels continue west to 60 Bloor Street West and the Manulife Centre. The pedestrian tunnels stretch along Bloor Street West all the way to the Bay subway station. This makes it one of Toronto's largest underground networks, second only to PATH.
History of the Building
The Hudson's Bay Centre was finished in 1974. It's built in the International style of architecture. For a while, it was the main office for the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), a famous retail company. Even though HBC moved its main office to the Simpson Tower in 1978, they are still the main tenant in the building.
In 2013, there was talk about giving the Hudson's Bay store a big makeover. The idea was to spend $100 million to turn it into the main Canadian store for Saks Fifth Avenue. Saks Fifth Avenue is a luxury department store from America, and it's also owned by the Hudson's Bay Company. However, later it was decided that HBC would renovate its other big Hudson's Bay store at Yonge and Queen Streets instead. That store would then include a Saks Fifth Avenue. So, the Yonge and Bloor location stayed a Hudson's Bay store.
