The Huerva River is a river located in Aragon, a region in Spain. It is a smaller river that flows into a larger one, the Ebro River. This means the Huerva is a tributary of the Ebro. On average, the Huerva carries about 67 cubic hectometres (54,000 acre⋅ft) of water each year.
Where the Huerva River Flows
This river is about 128-kilometre (80 mi) long. It starts high up in the Sierra de Cucalón mountains, which are part of the Iberian System. Its journey begins near a place called Fonfría in the Jiloca Comarca area.
The Huerva River first flows towards the northwest, passing by towns like Lagueruela and Villadoz. It gets bigger when another stream, the Arroyo de Villalpando, joins it near Villarreal de Huerva.
After that, the river changes direction and flows northeast. It goes through several towns and villages, including Mainar, Cerveruela, Vistabella de Huerva, and Tosos. It also passes Villanueva de Huerva, Muel, Cuarte de Huerva, Cadrete, and María de Huerva. Finally, the Huerva River reaches the Ebro River in the big city of Zaragoza. In Zaragoza, people sometimes call it 'La Huerva'.
Animals and Nature in the Huerva River
The upper parts of the Huerva River are quite clean and not very polluted. This is great news for many animals that live in the water!
Because the water is clean, you can find some special and even endangered species here. For example, there's a type of crayfish called Austropotamobius pallipes. You can also find different kinds of fish, such as Barbus haasi, Rutilus arcasii, and Chondrostoma toxostoma. These animals need clean water to survive, making the Huerva River an important home for them.
