Hugh James Rose (born 1795, died 1838) was an English priest and a deep thinker about religion. He was part of the Anglican Church. He also served as the second leader, called the Principal, of King's College, London, a famous university.

Early Life and Education

Hugh James Rose was born in Little Horsted, a place in Sussex, England, on June 9, 1795. He went to Uckfield School, where his father was the head teacher.

Later, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, which is a very old and respected university. He earned a degree called Bachelor of Arts in 1817.

Becoming a Priest

In 1818, Hugh James Rose became a deacon, which is the first step to becoming a priest in the Church of England. The next year, in 1819, he became a full priest. He also got married to Anne Cuyler that same year.

He started working as a priest in different towns. First, he was in Buxted, Sussex. Then, in 1821, he moved to Horsham, also in Sussex.

Important Ideas and Work

After traveling in Germany, Rose gave some speeches at Cambridge University. He spoke against "rationalism," which is a way of thinking that relies only on human reason and not on religious faith.

In 1830, he became the rector (head priest) of Hadleigh, Suffolk. He was known as a "high churchman." This meant he liked traditional church practices and ceremonies.

To share his ideas, he started a magazine called British Magazine in 1832. Through this magazine, he connected with leaders of the Oxford Movement. This was a group of people who wanted to bring back older traditions and beliefs to the Church of England.

A meeting at his home in Hadleigh led to the creation of a group called the Association of Friends of the Church. This group was formed by Hurrell Froude and William Palmer.

Later Career and Illness

From 1833 to 1834, Rose was a professor of religion at the University of Durham. However, he had to leave this job because he was not well.

In October 1836, he became the Principal of King's College, London. This was a very important leadership role. But he became very sick with influenza. After two years of poor health, he sadly passed away in Florence, Italy, on December 22, 1838.

He was buried in the English Cemetery in Florence. His name in the register was written as "Ugo Giacomo Rose."

His Writings

In 1825, Hugh James Rose published a book called The State of the Protestant Religion in Germany. This book was about the state of Protestantism in Germany.

He also became the editor of a large encyclopedia called the Encyclopædia Metropolitana in 1836. He also planned a new dictionary of biographies, which was a collection of life stories. His brother, Henry John Rose, helped to finish this project.
