Sir Hugh Kerr Anderson (born July 6, 1865 – died November 2, 1928) was an important British scientist. He studied how the human body works, which is called physiology. He was also a teacher and leader at a famous university college.
Early Life and Education
Hugh Anderson went to Harrow School, a well-known school in England. After that, he continued his studies at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. This is a college at the famous University of Cambridge.
He began his studies there in 1884. He focused on natural sciences, which include subjects like biology and chemistry. He earned several degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in 1887.
He also became a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) in 1898. He completed his medical training at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London.
Career and Achievements
Sir Hugh Kerr Anderson had a very successful career at Cambridge University. He was a Fellow of Caius College from 1897 to 1912. A Fellow is like a senior academic or researcher at a college.
Later, he became the Master of Caius College. This is the head or leader of the college. He held this important position from 1912 until 1928.
In 1918, he was also the Chairman of the Cambridge University Press. This is one of the oldest publishing houses in the world. It publishes academic books and journals.
In 1907, Sir Hugh was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very high honor for scientists in the United Kingdom. It means he was recognized for his important contributions to science.
Family Life
Sir Hugh Kerr Anderson married Jessie Mina Innes in 1894. Jessie was the daughter of Surgeon-General Francis William Innes.
Hugh and Jessie had two children together. Their son was named Austin Innes, born in 1897. Their daughter was Mary Desiree, born in 1902, who later became an author.
Jessie, Lady Anderson, passed away in 1946. She is buried with her husband in Cambridge.
Legacy
Sir Hugh Kerr Anderson passed away on November 2, 1928. He is buried at the Parish of the Ascension Burial Ground in Cambridge.
There is a special monument to him inside the chapel at Gonville and Caius College. His personal papers and writings are kept at the Janus Library in Cambridge.
