Church Roles and Career

Hugh Lloyd held several important church positions. In 1617, he was appointed to lead the church in St Andrews, Dinas Powis, Glamorgan. He took on another role in St Nicholas in the same county in 1626.

Later, in 1637, he was given the job of rector of Denbigh. This was a special role that did not require much work. In 1638, he also became the leader of the church in Hirnant, Montgomeryshire. By 1644, he was made a Canon and Archdeacon of St David's. This meant he was a senior church official.

Challenges During the Civil War

During the English Civil War, Hugh Lloyd strongly supported the King. Because of this, he lost his church jobs. He was even taken prisoner for three weeks. This happened after the Battle of St Fagans in May 1648. Colonel Thomas Horton captured him.

In 1651, there were orders for his arrest. In 1652, some of his property in Herefordshire was taken away. He was accused of disloyalty to the new government. However, he fought against this decision. He successfully got his property back in 1652.

Bishop of Llandaff

When the King returned to power in 1660, it was called the Restoration. Hugh Lloyd was then chosen to be the Bishop of Llandaff. He was officially elected on 17 October 1660. He became a consecrated bishop on 2 December 1660.

He also got his previous church jobs back. He was reappointed to his old parishes and as Archdeacon. He was also made the rector of Llangattock in Brecknockshire.

Bishop Lloyd cared about education. He supported free schools for children. He wrote a letter to other church leaders about this. He said that Glamorgan was "utterly destitute of schools." He worked hard for the Llandaff area, which was his diocese. He was buried in Llandaff Cathedral.
