Hugh Marlowe (born Hugh Herbert Hipple; January 30, 1911 – May 2, 1982) was an American actor. He worked in movies, television, on stage, and on the radio.

Early Life
Hugh Marlowe was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His birth name was Hugh Herbert Hipple. His family had lived in the northeastern United States since the early days of the country. Some of his ancestors even came over on the Mayflower ship.
Acting Career
Starting Out
Marlowe began acting on stage in the 1930s. He started at the Pasadena Playhouse in California. At first, he used his birth name, then he was known as John Marlowe.
He first appeared on the Broadway stage in New York City in a play called Arrest That Woman (1936). From then on, he used the stage name Hugh Marlowe. He acted in several other Broadway plays, including Kiss the Boys Goodbye and Lady in the Dark.
In 1939 and 1940, Marlowe also worked as a voice actor on radio shows. He played Jim Curtis in the soap opera Brenda Curtis. He also played the main character in the first radio version of The Adventures of Ellery Queen.
Movies and TV Shows
In movies, Hugh Marlowe often played important supporting roles. His first film was Brilliant Marriage (1936). He appeared in many films, like Meet Me in St. Louis (1944).
He worked often for the movie studio 20th Century Fox. Some of his well-known films from this time include Twelve O'Clock High (1949), All About Eve (1950), and The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). He also appeared in Rawhide (1951) and Monkey Business (1952). Later, he was in movies like Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956) and Birdman of Alcatraz (1962).
Marlowe also acted in many television shows. He played a real person, Reverend William Hyde, in an episode of Crossroads in 1956. He also guest-starred in shows like The Andy Griffith Show (1961) and Rawhide (1962).
He made six guest appearances on the popular show Perry Mason. He played different characters, including a district attorney and even a murder victim. In 1964, he was in an episode of The Virginian. He also appeared in Hazel and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
Later Career
In his later years, Marlowe became a regular on the NBC daytime drama Another World. He played the character Jim Matthews from 1969 until he passed away in 1982. He was the last of four actors to play this role.
Many people thought Hugh Marlowe looked a lot like another actor, Richard Carlson.
Personal Life
Hugh Marlowe was married three times, and all his wives were actresses. He was married to Edith Atwater from 1941 to 1946. Then, he was married to K.T. Stevens from 1946 to 1968. They had two sons named Jeffrey and Christian. From 1968 until his death, he was married to Rosemary Torri. They had one son, Hugh Michael II.
Marlowe passed away in 1982 from a heart attack. He was 71 years old. He is buried at Ferncliff Cemetery and Mausoleum in New York.
