Hugh Thackeray Turner (born March 8, 1853 – died December 11, 1937) was an English architect. He was known for his work in the Arts and Crafts style. He also enjoyed painting china as a hobby.

Who Was Hugh Thackeray Turner?

Early Life and Training

Hugh Turner was born in a place called Foxearth, in Essex, England. His father, Reverend John Richard Turner, was a vicar. A vicar is a type of priest in the Church of England. His family came from Wiltshire.

When he was young, Turner became an apprentice to a famous architect, Sir George Gilbert Scott. An apprentice learns a trade by working with an expert. He also worked with Scott's son, George Gilbert Scott Jr.. This training helped him become a skilled architect.

Designing Amazing Buildings

Turner designed many interesting buildings. Some of his projects included Wycliffe Buildings (built in 1894) and The Court (built in 1902). He also designed Mead Cottage. These buildings are all located in Guildford, Surrey.

In 1899, Turner bought some land in Godalming, Surrey. He wanted to build his own house there. He designed a home called "Westbrook," which became his family's residence. He also planned the beautiful garden around it.

The Titanic Memorial

One of his special projects was the Philips Memorial Cloister. This cloister is a covered walkway with arches. It is located by the river in Godalming. Turner designed it with Gertrude Jekyll, a famous garden designer.

The cloister remembers Jack Philips, a brave hero from the Titanic. Jack Philips was the ship's senior wireless operator. He stayed at his post sending distress calls as the ship sank in 1912. His bravery helped save many lives.

His Family Life

In 1888, Hugh Turner married Mary Elizabeth Powell. She was an embroiderer, meaning she created art with needle and thread. Her father, Thomas Wilde Powell, was from Guildford.

Hugh and Mary had a daughter named Ruth. Ruth later married George Mallory. George Mallory was a famous mountain climber. He is known for trying to climb Mount Everest. He also taught at Charterhouse School.
