Father Hugh (I) the Bearded de Montfort-sur-Risle

Hugh de Montfort (Hugh II) (died around 1088) was an important person from Normandy. He was the Lord of Montfort-sur-Risle. He also held a high position as a top official in Normandy.

Hugh was a close helper of William the Conqueror. His father, Hugh "the Bearded" de Montfort, died in a fight in 1045.

Hugh's Role with William the Conqueror

Hugh was an early supporter of William the Conqueror. He fought in the Battle of Mortemer in 1054. This battle was a big defeat for King Henry I of France.

Planning the Invasion of England

In January 1066, Hugh took part in the Council of Lillebonne. At this meeting, important leaders decided to invade England. Hugh helped a lot with the invasion. He gave 50 ships and 60 knights to William.

Rewards for His Support

After William conquered England, Hugh received many rewards. He was put in charge of William's fortress in Winchester. He also got a lot of land in places like Essex, Kent, Norfolk, and Suffolk.

Hugh's Family

Hugh de Montfort was married twice.

First Marriage

Hugh's first wife was a daughter of Richard de Beaufour. They had one daughter:

  • Alice de Montfort-sur-Risle, who married Gilbert de Gant. Their family later became important noblemen.

Second Marriage

Hugh and his second wife (whose name is not known) had three children:

  • Robert I de Montfort-sur-Risle (died before 1111)
  • Hugh III de Montfort, Lord of Haughley (died before 1100)
  • Adeline de Montfort-sur-Risle, who married William of Breteuil. William was the oldest son of William FitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford.

Hugh de Montfort passed away in England sometime after 1088.
