Eure is a beautiful region in northwestern France. It is one of the departments that make up the larger region of Normandy. Eure gets its name from the Eure River, which flows through it. The main city and capital of Eure is Évreux. As of 2022, about 601,305 people lived in Eure. This area is known for its lovely landscapes, including forests and river valleys.

A Journey Through Time

Eure was created a very long time ago. It was one of the first 83 departments formed during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. This new department was made from a part of the old province called Normandy. The Eure River, which runs through the area, gave the department its name.

After a big battle called Waterloo, soldiers from Prussia stayed in Eure. This happened between June 1815 and November 1818. Later, during a time of political change in France in 1851, Eure experienced a period of special rules.

Exploring the Land of Eure

Eure is part of the Normandy region. It shares borders with several other departments. These include Seine-Maritime, Oise, Val-d'Oise, Yvelines, Eure-et-Loir, Orne, and Calvados. Eure also has a small coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. This is near where the Seine River meets the sea. It is the only department in Normandy that borders the Île-de-France region.

The land in Eure is mostly a wooded plateau. This means it's a high, flat area covered with trees. The Seine River and its smaller rivers cut through this plateau, forming valleys. The height of the land changes a lot. It goes from sea level in the north to 248 meters (about 814 feet) high in the south.

Évreux is the biggest city in Eure. It is also the capital. Here are some of the other towns with more than 10,000 people, based on 2019 numbers:
