Carl Wilhelm Hugo Schnars-Alquist (born October 29, 1855 – died August 20, 1939) was a German artist who loved to paint pictures of the sea. He was born in Hamburg, Germany.

Hugo Schnars-Alquist came from a family of merchants. He first worked as a merchant himself. But he was also a self-taught artist. This means he learned to paint mostly by himself. In 1886, he studied for a short time with Hans Gude at the Berlin Art Academy.

His Art and Travels

Schnars-Alquist became famous for his sea paintings. He traveled a lot by ship. These voyages helped him learn how to paint the sea in many different ways. He could show it calm and sunny, or stormy and wild. He captured how the sea looked in various parts of the world.

Exhibitions and Awards

In 1893, Hugo Schnars-Alquist represented Germany in fine arts. This was at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This was a very big world's fair. He was also part of the group that judged art at exhibitions in Chicago and Melbourne. He won a Gold medal at the Melbourne exhibition for his amazing work.

Other Interests

Schnars-Alquist was interested in more than just art. He was a member of the Hamburg Geographical Society. This group studies geography and maps. He also belonged to the Institute for Maritime Studies. This institute was part of the University of Berlin. It focused on studying the sea and ships.
