Hume (which used to be called Humes) is a small community in Fresno County, California. It's about 50 miles (80 km) east of Fresno. This community sits high up in the mountains, at an elevation of 5,344 feet (1,629 meters). Hume is located in the 93628 ZIP Code area and uses area code 559.
Hume is right on the south shore of Hume Lake. It's nestled within the Sequoia National Forest, and it's not far from the west entrance of Kings Canyon National Park. Many people visit Hume because it's a popular spot for tourism. A lot of the people who live in Hume have homes in the Hume Lake Subdivision.
The biggest place at Hume Lake is Hume Lake Christian Camps. This is a special camp and conference center for Christian groups.
History
The Hume Lake Subdivision was created to help fund the Hume Lake Christian Camps. John Strain was the person who first surveyed the land for the subdivision. Don French then built the roads and water systems for the area. They divided the land into 247 lots, which were leased for 99 years.
Hume has had a post office for a long time. It first opened in 1908 and operated until 1924. Then, it reopened in 1938 and has been open ever since. By 1986, more than 230 homes had been built in the Hume Lake Subdivision.
