Humphreys is found in the southwest corner of Sullivan County. It sits right where two state roads, Route 6 and Route 139, meet. Another town called Galt is about four miles to the west. Two creeks, Medicine Creek and Muddy Creek, flow near the village.
The United States Census Bureau says the village covers about 0.25 square miles (0.65 square kilometers) of land.
A Look at Humphreys' Past
Humphreys was first planned out in April 1881. It was originally called Haley City. The town started with 17 blocks and 246 lots. More blocks were added in 1882. Around that time, its name changed to Humphreys.
The town grew quickly because it was on the Quincy, Missouri & Pacific Railroad line. A train station was built in August 1881. The first store opened in June 1881. By the end of that year, Humphreys had four hotels, two drug stores, and other shops.
Early Businesses and News
In 1882, the Humphreys Milling Company opened. This was a large, steam-powered flour mill. It could make up to 25 barrels of flour each day.
The town also had its own weekly newspaper, the Humphreys Gazette. It started in late 1881. The newspaper's name changed to the Humphreys Advance in 1884. However, it stopped being published in 1887.
Learning in Humphreys: Education History
Before 1885, children in Humphreys went to a typical one-room schoolhouse. It was located about three-quarters of a mile northwest of the village.
In 1884, the Humphreys College and Business Institute was started. It was built on four acres of land given by James M. Stringer. A large, two-story brick building was finished in 1884. The first classes began on September 29, 1884.
Humphreys College allowed both boys and girls to attend. It offered two types of study: preparatory (getting ready for college) and collegiate (college-level courses). In 1887, 157 students were enrolled. The college did not have dorms, but students could stay in local hotels or private homes. Sadly, Humphreys College and Business Institute was completely destroyed by fire on April 8, 1893.
Humphreys Today
Today, Humphreys is mostly a "bedroom community." This means most people who live there travel to other towns for work. They might go to larger cities like Milan, Trenton, Brookfield, or Kirksville.
The population of Humphreys has changed over the years. It was at a low of 98 people in 1990. Then it grew to 164 citizens in 2000.
Children from Humphreys now go to the Grundy County R-5 school in Galt. The schools from Humphreys and Galt joined together in 1966. The Humphreys post office, which opened in 1881, was planned for permanent closure in 2011.
