The Hungerford Bridge is a famous railway bridge in London, England. It is also often called the Charing Cross Bridge. This important bridge crosses the River Thames, one of London's main rivers.
It connects Charing Cross railway station on the north side of the river to the south side, which is close to Waterloo station. The Hungerford Bridge is located between two other well-known bridges: Waterloo Bridge and Westminster Bridge.
The bridge is made of steel. It has two newer pedestrian walkways on either side of the main railway bridge. These walkways are officially named the Golden Jubilee Bridges. They allow people to walk across the Thames right next to the trains. Each footpath has steps and lifts to help people get on and off the bridge easily.
Where is the Hungerford Bridge?
The north end of the Hungerford Bridge is right at Charing Cross railway station. This area is also near Embankment Pier and the Victoria Embankment, which is a road and walkway along the river.
On the south side, the bridge is very close to Waterloo station, another major train station. You can also find famous landmarks like County Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, and the London Eye on this side.
History of the Bridge
The very first bridge at this spot was designed by a famous engineer named Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It opened in 1845. That original bridge was a suspension bridge, which means it hung from large cables.
Over the years, the bridge has been changed and made bigger several times. The current railway bridge was built in 1864. The pedestrian walkways, known as the Golden Jubilee Bridges, were added much later in 2002.
