Hunsel is a small and friendly village located in the south-eastern part of the Netherlands. It's a quiet place where about 950 people live as of 2021. Hunsel is part of the Leudal municipality in the Limburg province.

History of Hunsel

Hunsel was first mentioned way back in the year 1400. We don't know exactly where its name came from, but the village grew up along a stream called the Uffelse beek.

In 1840, only 236 people lived in Hunsel. For a long time, Hunsel was its own separate municipality, which is like its own small local government area. It included other nearby villages like Ell, Haler, Ittervoort, and Neeritter. But on January 1, 2007, Hunsel became part of the larger Leudal municipality.

The St Jacobus Church

The Catholic St Jacobus de Meerdere Church is a very old building in Hunsel. It has a single main area for people to sit, and its tower is on the side. The tower was built around the year 1300!

In 1839, a new part of the church was built next to the old tower. Later, between 1925 and 1926, the church was made even bigger by an architect named Joseph Cuypers.

During World War II, in 1944, the church tower was unfortunately blown up. The rest of the church was fixed in 1946. Then, in 1955, a brand new tower was built. It was designed to look just like the old one.

The Uffelse Watermill

Hunsel is also home to the Uffelse Molen, which is a watermill. This mill was built around 1800 and was used to grind grain. It stopped working in 1961. However, in 2008, the mill was fixed up and restored, so it looks great again!

Local Football Club

Hunsel has its very own football club called RKHVC. It was started in 1943, and it's a big part of the community.
