Hunts Corners (also called Hunt's Corners or Moorehead) is a small, unincorporated community in Huron County, Ohio, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. It's located in southeastern Lyme Township. You can find it where State Route 547 and Sand Hill Road meet. Hunts Corners is southeast of Bellevue and southwest of Norwalk, which is the main city of Huron County. It sits about 768 feet (234 meters) above sea level.

What is the History of Hunts Corners?

Hunts Corners is one of the oldest communities in Huron County. It was started in 1811 by a man named Levi Sutton from Virginia. He called it the "Sutton Settlement." This was six years before the first settlers even arrived in Norwalk!

Why Did Hunts Corners Grow Slowly?

Even though it was an early settlement, Hunts Corners didn't grow very fast for a long time. Here are some reasons why:

  • Many of the first landowners were speculators. These were people who bought land hoping its value would go up. They often didn't want to sell their land to new settlers.
  • Some land was caught up in probate lawsuits. This means there were legal problems over who owned the land after someone died.
  • Land farther west, owned by the government, was cheaper. This made people less interested in buying land in Hunts Corners, which was on the edge of an area called the Firelands. The Firelands was a special area set aside for people who lost property during the American Revolutionary War.

Even though the first sawmill in the area was built on Levi Sutton's land, other parts of the township became more important for industry later on.

Why is Hunts Corners a Historic Place?

In 1993, Hunts Corners was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important to history. Hunts Corners was recognized as a historic district because of its role in exploring and settling the region.

It is one of only three places in Huron County on the National Register. The other two are West Main Street in Norwalk and the county courthouse complex. Being on this list helps protect these important historical sites.
