A Look at Hunts Pond's History
Hunts Pond State Park covers about 235 acres (0.95 km2). For many years, it was managed by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. This office takes care of state parks.
From Park to Forest
In 2011, something changed for Hunts Pond. The park's ownership and management moved to a different group. This new group is the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS-DEC). Since then, Hunts Pond has become part of the much bigger Hunts Pond State Forest. This forest is a large 1,397 acres (5.65 km2) area. It is a protected space for nature and wildlife.
Fun Activities at Hunts Pond
Right in the middle of this area is Hunts Pond, a 50-acre (20 ha) lake. Even though it's no longer a state park, the land is still open for everyone to enjoy.
Exploring the Outdoors
You can do many fun things at Hunts Pond. It's a great place for hiking on trails. If you like to fish, you can try your luck in the pond. During certain times of the year, you can even go deer hunting. In winter, the area is perfect for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
Boating and Fishing
There is a special launch area for boats. To keep the pond clean and healthy, only boats without motors are allowed. This helps protect the water and the animals that live there.
Camping Adventures
Since 2013, you can camp at Hunts Pond again! There are 12 simple campsites located around the pond. These campsites are open from May 1 to September 30 each year. If you want to camp, you need to get a free permit. You can get this permit from the NYS-DEC office in Sherburne. You can also do simple camping in other parts of Hunts Pond State Forest. Just make sure to follow the general rules for state forests.
