Sherburne's Early History
The land where Sherburne is now was first home to the Oneida people. In the late 1780s, the state of New York bought this land. Then, the state sold pieces of it at an auction in New York City.
The first group of settlers arrived in Sherburne around 1792. They built their homes near what is now Sherburne village. The town got its name from a popular song called "Sherburne." This song was written in 1783 by Daniel Read, and the early settlers loved to sing it often.
Most of the first people to settle in Sherburne came from Kent, Connecticut. Around 1785 or 1786, after the American Revolutionary War ended, these future settlers moved to Duanesburg, New York. But they couldn't get official ownership of the land there. So, they decided to move again, this time to the Chenango River Valley. This area was just starting to open up for new settlers.
In June 1791, a small group of explorers visited the Chenango Valley. They were looking for land for their community. They found a family already living in a simple cabin by Handsome Brook. This family was very welcoming. The explorers looked at a large piece of land, about 6,222 acres. They and their friends later bought this land for $1.25 per acre.
The explorers returned to Duanesburg with good news. In the summer of 1792, they came back to Sherburne and built a cabin. Most of them returned to their families in Duanesburg after their work was done. Only Abram Raymond and his wife, Betsey, stayed behind.
Within a year, in March 1793, many more settlers arrived in Sherburne. These were the original landowners and their families. Many of their friends and neighbors from Duanesburg also joined them. The first official group they formed was the Congregational Church of Sherburne, started on July 6, 1794.
The town of Sherburne was officially created in 1795. It was formed from a part of the town of Paris. Later, in 1808, the town of Smyrna was created from a part of Sherburne. In 1852, Sherburne grew bigger when it took in a part of the town of New Berlin.
In 1837, the Chenango Canal opened. This canal ran right through Sherburne. It made it much cheaper and faster to get goods and supplies. During the American Civil War, soldiers from the Union Army even camped along the canal. Later, in 1867, the railroad replaced the canal. Two trains came through Sherburne every day, making travel and trade even easier.
