Hunza River facts for kids
The Hunza River (دریائے ہنزہ in Urdu) is a very important river in the Hunza region of Pakistan. It's located in an area called Gilgit-Baltistan.
This river is formed when several smaller rivers join together. These include the Khunjerab River, Gujerab River, Misgar River, Chapursan River, and Shimshal River. All these rivers get their water from melting glaciers.
The Hunza River flows south towards Nagar, then turns west. From a place called Chalit, it turns south again. It passes through the Nomal Valley and eventually reaches Gilgit city. There, it flows into the Gilgit River. The Naltar River also joins the Gilgit River at this point. Finally, the Gilgit River, carrying the Hunza's water, flows into the mighty Indus River.

Rivers that join the Hunza
Many smaller rivers, called tributaries, flow into the Hunza River. These rivers bring water from different parts of the mountains.
Hispar River
The Hispar River starts from the melting ice of the Hispar Glacier. This glacier is about 49 kilometers long and is found in the Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan. Both the Hispar Glacier and its river flow northwest. They pass through villages like Hispar, Hopar, and Nagar. Eventually, the Hispar River joins the Hunza River in the Hunza Valley.
Khunjerab River
The Khunjerab River begins high up in the snowy mountains and glaciers near the Khunjerab Pass. It flows west, then turns south. This river eventually flows into the Hunza River.
Chapursan River
The Chapursan River starts near the Chilanji Pass and the slopes of Kampiri Diwar peak. It flows east and joins the Khunjerab River close to Khuda Abad.
Gujerab River
The Gujerab River begins from small glaciers and snow-covered mountains in the Gujerab range. It flows west and later joins the Khunjerab River.
Misgar River
The Misgar River starts on the slopes of the mountains between Mintaka and the Kilik Pass. This area is on the northern edge of Gilgit. It flows southeast and then empties into the Khunjerab River.
Shimshal River
The Shimshal River begins at the Shimshal Pass. It gets water from Virjirab and other glaciers in the northeastern part of the Gilgit Agency. It flows west and joins the Khunjerab River near Passu. After this, the Khunjerab River flows into the Hunza River.
